Winter Engagement Photos: City Glam Meets Outdoor Wonder

We lucked out with the weather while taking Ashley & Steve’s winter engagement photos that took us all over downtown Grand Rapids and Provin Trails in Grand Rapids Township. We had a balmy 37 degrees on a Saturday morning right in the middle of the artic blast that has gripped Michigan over the past few weeks. Ashley is a California girl now dealing with the cold, cold winters the mitten state has to offer… but that did not deter her from rocking a sequin shamrock Badgley Mischka dress. She brought the chic and Steve brought a little bit of country with his dark purple cowboy boots. We stayed mostly around the Amway hotel so we could pop inside and warm up when needed. Since Ashley is from Cali and Steve from Michigan, they wanted use a few locations that make Grand Rapids unique as their backdrop. The Calder sculpture being one of them. We ended the downtown Grand Rapids session at Reserve Food & Wine for a taste of bubbly since this is where Steve asked Ashley got engaged. Then we headed to Provin Trails for some woodsy shots to add outdoorsy to the urban.

I have had more couples take advantage of winter engagement photos this year than ever before. Not only are these sessions fun,  you can get really creative. The downtown Grand Rapids urban setting provides interesting backdrops and the muted lighting of winter compliments every complexion.  Who doesn’t love a sequined dress in the snowy wooded outdoors.  Throw in a quilt and a comfy outfit and you have a completely different look. These are some of the reasons winter engagement photos are my favorite!

the Darlings and their Dog

I have a special place in my heart for this family. Their name says it all. I am honored to call them friends. They wanted a quick sunset family portrait with their pet and it was the perfect night to capture a few special moments between a dog and his family.

Carly & Nicole

This was a first for me….I had never photographed besties together before this session. It was one of those perfect fall evenings and we bounced all around town having a great time. We started downtown and ended up at Luton Park to catch the sunset.

Abby M. Interiors

Abby from Abby M. Interiors asked me to capture the transformation of her client’s master bedroom that she had entered into the One Room Challenge. The One Room Challenge consists of 20 interior designers who have 6 weeks to transform one room from an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan and post pictures of the final product for the big reveal.

I think Abby knocked it out of the park. So grateful to work with her on these projects. If you haven’t checked out her blog you definitely should do it now!      http://www.abbyminteriorsblog.com/

Ashley & Kyle

Where do I begin? This day was beautiful in every detail from beginning up until the end. I captured the most images at this wedding than ever before and that is saying something. Then I had to go through them all and decide which ones would stay, not an easy task in itself.

These images are a mere glimpse of the entire day.  Ashley & Kyle were fantastic to work with and I think it shows in their images. They set enough time aside for us to not only capture a bunch of images at St.Andrew’s Cathedral where they were married.  We also went to the Ford Museum, the Civic Auditorium , the Amway Hotel and then spent time on the property at Cascade Country Club. It was a photographer’s dream.

Anna & Ian

It was a windy, fall day which only added to their already fun style. We had a great time bouncing around Holland on this Sunday morning session. I cannot wait to shoot their wedding next year!

Seth’s Senior Session

I seriously love this guy.  I asked him if there was anything he wanted to do to make his Senior Session complete. He replied, “I want a shot of me throwing money up in the air and it raining down on me.” What? You bet. Done.

Lyons Family

I love this family! We are started out as friends and through the years they definitely feel like family. I have had the privilege of capturing their weddings and cute little additions throughout the years. Their house always makes for the best backdrop.

Here’s to many more family portraits on the beach my friends!

Morgan

I always love matching the scenery with my client’s outfits. In this particular Senior Session, we bounced all around downtown Grand Rapids to get a variety of backdrops to match the 5 outfits Morgan brought that day. Love the end result.2014-09-27_0001 2014-09-27_00022014-09-27_00032014-09-27_0004 2014-09-27_0005 2014-09-27_00082014-09-27_0006 2014-09-27_0007
